People stored their belongings in nooks in the walls of the baths. Many people were unable to read so there were erotic paintings above each of the nooks so people could remember where they stores their belongings. Sometimes slaves were employed to guard the items but because the steams from the baths were so hot many slaves fell asleep and things were stolen. One way that they stopped thieves was by the use of curse tablets. As Romans were afraid of their gods the owners of the items would curse them if they stole.
